Cucumber Sandwiches
We eat cucumber sandwiches
under misty afternoon sun
by a brook where
we once skipped rocks
as children we
thought we alone
could claim this space
and lazy afternoons
would last forever
now we watch
others’ children
skipping rocks
in the same creek
carelessly throwing
another afternoon
hurrying to get
to the next
